I used to love to read when I was younger. I just don’t have the luxury of being able to read anymore like I used to. In order for me to be able to absorb what I’m reading, I need a fairly quiet environment. Between my son and my husband, I do not experience much quiet in my life as it is now. It has been quite a long time since I read a book. A couple years ago I made time to read a book I’d been wanting to read for quite a long time and it took me a while to finish it but I enjoyed it.
The last book I read was The Life and Loves of a She-Devil by Fay Weldon. I had seen the She-Devil movie with Meryl Streep and Rosanne Barr. I had watched the old BBC mini-series. I wanted to read the book to see how they compared. The movie was an incredibly almost-Disney-fied version of the story. The mini-series followed a bit more closely to the book and captured the much darker under-story on which it was based but still skipped quite a few things. If you like stories where someone gets handed a raw deal in life and then manages to get vengeance on everyone who has wronged her, then this is quite the tale. The plot is incredibly misandrist but despite that, I do love a good revenge narrative.
